Welcome to the first issue of BioSci’s Research Bulletin

The School of Biological Sciences’ Research Bulletin aims to communicate research-related information and serve as a single source for news about grants, funding opportunities, research administration updates, seminars and other events. Issues of the Bio Bulletin will be sent out regularly during the academic year.

Announcements

Both NSF and NIH have released new policies and procedures for submitting grants.

NSF’s new version of the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG 22-1) went into effect on October 4, 2021.
NIH will start using Forms G for all proposals submitted on or after January 25, 2022. Forms F will continue to be accepted for proposals due on or before January 24.

Help BioSci to prioritize instrument acquisitions by taking the infrastructure survey.

Infrastructure is always evolving and we need your feedback. The goal of BioSci’s annual infrastructure survey is to help the school map short-term needs and longer-term strategies. Please tell us your ideas, priorities, requests, and problems for shared equipment and core facilities by taking the survey by November 1.

Getting Grants

NIH F-series services for graduate students and postdocs

Do you have a postdoc or graduate student who intends to submit a F30, F31, F31-D, or F32 proposal to NIH? Staff with BioSci’s pre-award and research development teams will be hosting an information session on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 10AM. The workshop will take place in person, and the room number will be sent to those who register. Please register here and contact Justin Sarkis (sarkisj@uci.edu) with any questions.

A great way to learn how to write competitive grants is to review proposals

NIH offers an Early Career Reviewer Program that aims to help early career scientists become more competitive as grant applicants through first-hand experience with peer review. Learn how NIH selects reviewers
To become an NSF reviewer, send an email to the NSF program officer(s) of the program(s) that fits your expertise. Introduce yourself and identify your areas of expertise, and let them know that you are interested in becoming a peer reviewer. NSF advises that you attach a 2-page CV with current contact information. Also, you and your postdocs can register to review NSF Graduate Research Fellowship applications.

Receive feedback on your NIH specific aims

The Dean’s Office has secured a contract with a retired program administrator so that you can get feedback on the NIH specific aims page. Dr. Heindel will provide detailed comments on the specific aims page (up to 3 revisions), ensuring that your specific aims page provides the needed information with a logical flow and sufficient detail. Email bio-research@uci.edu with questions.

Funding Opportunities

Internal applications for NSF’s Major Research Instrumentation program due October 21.

NSF limits institutions to submitting 3 proposals to NSF’s MRI program. Two submissions are for awards totaling between $100K and $1M and one proposal can request between $1M and $4M. Proposals are due to NSF in January annually. UCI’s internal competition has received between 6-10 proposals for the past 3 years. Internal competition applications will be due to the Office of Research on October 21st, and the selected candidates will have until January 19, 2022 to submit to the NSF.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) deadlines are October 18-22.

NSF has increased the number of GRFP awards by 500 to 2500. Have your graduate students contact Justin Sarkis, BioSci’s Research Development Coordinator, for help with an application.
