Announcements

NSF-BIO announces new programs to broaden participation.

The Directorate for Biological Sciences of the National Science Foundation has added new programs to its portfolio, with the goal of broadening participation in the biological sciences and STEM more broadly. NSF-BIO will discuss these funding opportunities in an upcoming virtual office hour on November 18, 2021 at 10AM PT. You can register here for that session. Getting Grants

An easier way to look for funding opportunities

ProQuest’s Pivot funding search tool allows you to look for funding opportunities across a wide range of research areas and sponsors. Faculty may find Pivot useful to search for research and career development opportunities. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows may use Pivot to browse available fellowships. All UCI faculty, staff, and students have access to ProQuest’s Pivot funding opportunities database.

Register to use Pivot here, and browse the user guides here. Please contact Justin Sarkis for further assistance.

The catalytic powers of NIH Diversity Supplements

In case you missed it, you can watch the recording of UC Global Health Institute’s webinar on NIH Diversity Supplements. As one of the panelists mentioned, diversity supplements are underutilized yet catalytic opportunities for a trainee’s scientific career. UCI’s Institute for Clinical & Translational Science also has a resource page.

Funding Opportunities

UCI Research Seed Funding Program

The Seed Funding Program’s goal is to stimulate successful extramural research proposals. The 2021-2022 program will invest in promising research teams and directions where internal seed level investment can lead to externally funded multiple investigator, interdisciplinary projects on the scale of a research center. Proposals must address one or more national R&D priorities.

Multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary teams may request funding for planning, capacity building, obtaining pilot data, and research development activities for up to 2 years and up to $150,000. The Office of Research expects to fund 5 to 8 projects this year. Full competition details and proposal guidelines are located here. The BioSci research development team can assist PIs in identifying potential research team members and developing proposals.

Deadline: Monday, January 10, 2022 on UCI Review

Clinical Relevance of the Linkage between Environmental Toxicant Exposures and Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (NIH R01)

NIH has added the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to the above FOA. NIEHS’s mission is “to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives.” NIA and NINDS are also participating.

Deadline: Friday, March 11, 2022
