Getting Grants

Finding a match with NIH’s Matchmaker tool

Did you know that you can paste abstracts, research bios, and other scientific text into NIH’s Matchmaker tool? The results will show you relevant institutes/centers (ICs), program officials, activity codes, and study sections that pertain to your text. This information can make your NIH proposal more competitive by knowing which IC or program official to reach out to during the application process and where your proposal is likely to be reviewed.

Funding Opportunities

UCI ICTS Pilot Studies Award

The UCI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) is accepting Letter of Intent (LOI) applications for the Pilot Studies Awards program. This is a two-phase application process in which applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal. A Letter of Intent submission is required to be considered for funding, and not all submitted LOI will advance to the second phase for review.

To be eligible, the Principal Investigator or co-Investigator MUST attend a workshop on general application preparation or one of the special-topic workshops offered by the ICTS. Registration is required to attend, so please register for a workshop. Additional workshops may be added in response to interest.

Up to eight one-year awards (maximum $25,000) will be conferred in this round. The earliest funding will be released is July 1, 2022, and all funds must be expended by June 30, 2023.

Full competition details can be found here.

Phase 1 (letter of intent) deadline: Friday, December 10, 2021
Phase 2 (full proposal) deadline: Friday, February 25, 2021

UCI Research Seed Funding Program, UCI Office of Research

The Seed Funding Program’s goal is to stimulate successful extramural research proposals. The 2021-2022 program will invest in promising research teams and directions where internal seed level investment can lead to externally funded multiple investigator, interdisciplinary projects on the scale of a research center. Proposals must address one or more national R&D priorities.

Multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary teams may request funding for planning, capacity building, obtaining pilot data, and research development activities for up to 2 years and up to $150,000. The Office of Research expects to fund 5 to 8 projects this year. Full competition details and proposal guidelines are located here. The BioSci research development team can assist PIs in identifying potential research team members and developing proposals.

Deadline: Monday, January 10, 2022 on UCI Review

NIH Transition to Aging Research for Predoctoral Students (F99/K00)

NIA funds graduate students from a wide range of broad research areas who are interested in receiving aging-related postdoctoral training. The goal of this program is to recruit and retain emerging investigators to aging research. The first phase of this award allows the student to complete their dissertation and acquire training support that facilitates a smooth transition into an aging-focused postdoctoral position. You can find the Funding Opportunity Announcement here.

Deadline: February 3, 2022

NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships (EAR-PF)

The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) awards fellowships for up to 2 years to postdocs who conduct research within EAR’s scope. The program intends to provide postdocs with research experience, mentorship, and training that will establish them as leaders within Earth Sciences. NSF will award approximately 10 to 12 fellowships per year. The solicitation, which describes the program in detail can be found here: NSF 21-605. You can also check out the program page.

Deadline: October 26, 2022 and the last Wednesday in October, annually thereafter

New Grant Awards

Congratulations to Brian Sato!

Congratulations to Brian Sato, Ph.D. (co-PI) and his colleagues with The Institute for Meaningful Engagement at UCI, who received almost $3 million from the National Science Foundation to develop inclusive spaces in STEM higher education. The team seeks to understand why underrepresented students leave STEM fields and how improving classroom cultures can retain these students. Dr. Sato is Associate Dean of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and Professor of Teaching in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. You can read more about his work and the project here and read the NSF project abstract here.
