Submitting to NSF? Don’t make this formatting mistake

NSF allows Arial, Courier New, and Palatino Linotype fonts to be as small as 10 points. At the same time, text cannot be set to more than six lines per vertical inch. Therefore, if you decide to use these fonts at 10 points, set your line spacing to “exactly 12 points” (screenshot below).

Remember: NSF may return your proposal without review, if it doesn't comply with this rule. Research.gov will reject documents with more than six lines of text per vertical inch, but FastLane will not give an error message. It’s up to the PI to make sure that their documents follow NSF’s formatting guidelines.

New Mass Cytometer Will Enhance Research Capabilities

A new Helios mass cytometer in the Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center will enhance the research of several BioSci faculty members and their labs. The cytometer will be used by researchers working on projects in cancer (Chris Halbrook, MBB), wound healing (Maksim Plikus, DevCell), neuroinflammation (Thomas Lane, NBB and Craig Walsh, MBB), and stem cells (Matthew Inlay, MBB). You can read more about this transformative instrument here.

Fund Fact

In FY 2021, 71% of the dollars ($45.2 M) awarded to BioSci faculty through contracts and grants were awarded to the school. The rest of the money (totaling $18.5 M) was awarded to another school on campus or an ORU (e.g., IMIND).
