Final FY 22 Science Budgets Receive Boosts
Health, defense, climate, and clean energy will receive boosts in funding from the federal government for FY 2022 (from 10/1/2021 to 9/30/2022). Inflation, unfortunately, has outpaced these increases.

NIH’s base budget is increasing $2 billion to $45 billion, so that each of NIH’s 27 institutes and centers will receive a budget increase of at least 3%.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) will be launched to drive forward high-risk, high-reward research with $1 billion going to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Separate bills are working their way through Congress that would provide more money for ARPA-H.

NSF’s topline budget will increase 4% to $8.8 billion. The bill restricts NSF from diverting existing program funds to new activities, so NSF must maintain at least level funding for “core research” and infrastructure. Little money is available to fund the new Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP).

DOE’s Office of Science will gain 6% to $7.5 billion with the Biological and Environmental Research and the Nuclear Physics programs receiving the largest percentage increases.

Spring 2022 NSF BIO Advisory Committee Meeting
Purpose of Meeting: The Advisory Committee for the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) provides advice, recommendations, and oversight concerning major program emphases, directions, and goals for the research-related activities of the divisions that make up BIO.
Agenda Items Will Include: a directorate business update; an overview of BIO’s portfolio and standard metrics; discussion of use-inspired research in context of the Convergence Accelerator program, workforce development programs in the Directorate of Education and Human Resources, industry partnership opportunities, and BIO’s support for climate-related research; updates from the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering and the AC for Environmental Research and Education; discussion with the NSF Chief Operating Officer; and other directorate matters.

UC Research Initiatives in the UC Office of the President has issued the UC Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives Request for Proposals for award year 2023. This Request for Proposals includes opportunities for both Planning/Pilot Awards and Program Awards.
Applicant Information: The MRPI opportunity is open to UC faculty and researchers in any field of research and scholarship. Proposals require collaboration among at least three UC campuses to pursue pioneering research in thematic, multidisciplinary, or inter-disciplinary areas that enhance the UC research enterprise, strengthen UC’s position as a leading public research university, and benefit California and its people. Approximately $16 million in total funding is available. All proposals must conform to the requirements of this RFP, dated March 16, 2022 and be submitted through the SmartSimple online system.

The purpose of the KUH Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award is to recruit truly exceptional graduate students, who are currently not involved in Kidney, Urology or Hematology (K, U or H) research, and provide them a stable transition into a postdoctoral research experience focused on K, U, or H research. The F99/K00 award is intended for individuals who require up to 2 years to complete their Ph.D. dissertation research training (F99 phase) and provide them with a stable transition into mentored postdoctoral research training (K00 phase) for up to 4 years.

NIH NRSA Fellowship Success Rates
Given that the NIH NRSA Fellowship deadline is today, some people may be curious about success rates.
In FY 2020–the most recent NIH data available–the national F31 success rate was 27.8%. The F30 had a success rate of 37.8%, and the F32 had a success rate of 29.4%.
Remember: You can resubmit an NRSA fellowship proposal if you don't receive an award on your first try. Best of luck to all applicants!
