NSF’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan: Vision for the Next Five Years

The National Science Foundation’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan describes NSF's mission, vision, core values, goals, and strategic objectives for the next five years. The NSF 2022-2026 Strategic Plan builds on 70 years of NSF driving critical research across all fields of science and engineering and lays out NSF’s vision for the future of discovery and innovation. You can read the plan in full here.

The NSF Vision: A nation that leads the world in science and engineering research and innovation, to the benefit of all, without barriers to participation.

The NSF Mission: NSF promotes the progress of science by investing in research to expand knowledge in science, engineering and education. NSF also invests in actions that increase the capacity of the U.S. to conduct and exploit such research.

To promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity and welfare; and to secure the national defense.

NSF 101: Funding Opportunities for Minority-Serving Institutions

The National Science Foundation has many programs designed to support researchers at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) and broaden participation of outstanding researchers from across a diverse group of regions, institutions and demographic groups. UCI qualifies as an MSI as both an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution and a Hispanic-serving institution. Click here to learn more about these opportunities.

The Art of Negotiation Virtual Workshop

There are many types of negotiation (building consensus, resolving problems within the workplace, managing conflicts constructively, job offers, etc.). This joint GPS-STEM - ICTS workshop will:

  • Introduce attendees to a theoretical framework for approaching situations of conflict using various negotiation styles

  • Dispel common misconceptions and fears associated with negotiation

  • Explain the negotiation process from start to finish from the perspectives of all involved parties

  • Provide hands-on case study to practice new techniques

Date: Thursday, May 19, 2022
Time: 12PM - 1:30PM
Please register to attend via Zoom.

Summer 2022 NSF Virtual Grants Conference

Held during the week of June 6-10, the National Science Foundation designed this conference to give new faculty, researchers, and administrators key insights into a wide range of current issues at NSF. NSF program officers will provide up-to-date information about specific funding opportunities and answer attendee questions.

Highlights include:

  • New programs and initiatives
  • NSF Directorate sessions
  • Future directions and strategies for national science policy
  • Proposal preparation and the merit review process
  • Award management topics

Registration is free and opens on Wednesday, May 11 at 9 a.m. PDT. Sign up here to be notified of conference registration details. For those who cannot attend the live conference, all conference sessions will be available on-demand shortly after the event.

Funding Opportunities

NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER)

The CAREER Program is an National Science Foundation-wide activity that offers the NSF's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from early-career faculty at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

Due date: July 27, 2022 (fourth Wednesday in July, annually thereafter)

NIH Director’s New Innovator Award Program (DP2)

The New Innovators award supports unusually creative Early Stage Investigators (ESI) who propose highly innovative, high-impact projects in the biomedical, behavioral, or social sciences within the NIH mission. For this program, preliminary data is not required, and proposals must be single PI only from investigators with ESI status. Investigators must dedicate at least 25% research effort. Direct costs are disbursed in the first year of the 5-year project period.

Due date: August 19, 2022

NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program

The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. Proposals are requested that address any interdisciplinary or convergent research theme of national priority. Proposals may request a total budget (up to five years in duration) up to $3 million for projects with a focus on STEM graduate students in research-based Ph.D. and/or master’s degree programs.

Note: This is a limited submission. Please click here to view the internal competition details.

Limited internal due date: July 7, 2022
Due date: September 6, 2022

NIH Transition to Aging Research for Predoctoral Students (F99/K00)

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) invites outstanding graduate students from a wide range of research areas who are interested in receiving aging-related postdoctoral training to apply to this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). This FOA seeks to foster the development of research and clinician scientists in the following areas: genetic, biological, clinical, epidemiological, neuroscientific, behavioral, social, and economic research on aging, both basic and translational. This two-phase award will allow awardees to complete doctoral dissertation projects and provide a variety of training support to facilitate the smooth transition of doctoral graduates into competitive, aging-focused postdoctoral positions.

Next due date: October 21, 2022

NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships (EAR-PF)

NSF GEO Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) requests postdoctoral fellowship proposals that address scientific questions within the scope of EAR. The theme of this solicitation is "issues relating to scale." EAR-PF recognizes beginning investigators of significant potential and provides them with research experience, mentorship, and training for leadership positions in the Earth Sciences. EAR has made it a priority to address challenges in creating an inclusive geoscience discipline through activities that increase belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. NSF especially encourages applicants who are women, veterans, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities in STEM to apply.

Fellows can receive up to $90,000 per year for up to two years of support. NSF awards EAR fellowships to individuals, not institutions. This means that they are portable (can be taken to the applicant's institution of choice) and are administered by the fellow.

Next due date: October 26, 2022
