Welcome back!

Welcome to the first issue of Research Bulletin of the academic year! Curated by BioSci’s Research Development team, each issue brings you relevant information on funding opportunities, research administration updates, and academic talks. This information comes from a variety of sources but mainly from within BioSci, UCI, and major sponsors, like NIH and NSF. You will receive issues of Research Bulletin regularly throughout the academic year, every other Friday. Is there content or information you’d like to see in Research Bulletin? Feel free to send your suggestions to bio-bulletin@uci.edu. Have a great start to the academic year!

Announcements

Are you ready for NIH’s new Policy for Data Management and Sharing?

On January 25, 2023, the new NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) will go into effect, replacing the current policy established in 2003. The DMS Policy applies to all research funded by NIH that results in the generation of scientific data. This policy means that most researchers submitting a proposal to NIH will need to develop and write a Data Management and Sharing Plan. We strongly encourage you to visit the NIH Scientific Data Sharing website for more information and helpful resources.

New NIH Forms in January 2023

In August, NIH announced new “FORMS-H” for application due dates on or after January 25, 2023. The new forms incorporate NIH’s new Policy for Data Management and Sharing.

Pre-Award Submission Timeline

Please remember to fill out the Pre-Award team’s Grant Proposal Information Form at least 4 weeks before your application deadline. Doing so ensures that every proposal receives the attention it deserves. Please take a moment to review the full proposal submission timeline on our website.

Getting Grants

UCI ICTS NIH Career Development Grant Writing Workshop K-Club

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) has coordinated a K-Club grant writing series intended for junior faculty and postdoctoral scholars preparing to submit applications for NIH Mentored Career Development awards. These awards are designed to promote the career development of postdoctoral and junior scholars looking to transition to research independence.

The objective of this program is to help better understand the NIH K award mechanism to create the strongest possible funding proposal and guide candidates through the K application components.

This structured workshop series is intended for scholars preparing competitive grant applications for the February or June 2023 NIH submissions, but all interested applicants are welcome to register. Scholars looking for informational insight to determine if the K award mechanism is right for them are also encouraged to attend. Please see this flier for a breakdown of the workshop schedule and registration information.

Funding Opportunities

UCI OIE Faculty Success Program (FSP) Awards

The Office of Inclusive Excellence will provide a limited number of career development grants (up to $2,000 each) to support UCI faculty participation in the nationally-recognized Faculty Success Program (FSP). FSP aims to improve faculty research productivity through intense accountability, coaching, and peer support. The virtual spring session is scheduled January 22, 2023-April 15, 2023.

Applications for the spring 2023 session must be submitted online at: https://inclusion.uci.edu/funding-programs/fsp/. UCI ladder-rank faculty (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, LSOE and LPSOE) are eligible for the career development grants. Interested applicants also are invited to learn about FSP from UCI faculty alumni at a Faculty Success Program Alumni Panel, scheduled 12 p.m.–1 p.m. on Friday, September 23. RSVP to attend this informal Zoom panel discussion at the FSP website or directly at: https://uciadvance.wufoo.com/forms/r1pq8kun0dw02j5/.

The current cost of the FSP tuition is $4,150 through the UCI institutional membership, and award recipients would be responsible for funding the program balance. For questions regarding the application process, please contact Dr. Marguerite Bonous-Hammarth at mbonoush@uci.edu.

Deadline: Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 5 p.m.

UCI OIE Dependent Care Travel Awards (DCTA)

Academic Senate faculty members are eligible to apply for the 2022 Dependent Care Travel Awards, which provide up to $1,000 to assist with childcare beyond regular arrangements to enhance academic productivity. The Fall 2022 call supports scholarly travel activities during the period of November 1, 2022–February 28, 2023.

All qualifying Senate faculty members (parents of a child age six years or younger at the time of application) are invited to apply. These awards are designed to subsidize childcare costs associated with travel to a professional conference or research meeting; the awards may also be used for daycare costs incurred during an approved sabbatical leave that requires relocation.

Please visit this webpage for additional information and to submit an online application.

Deadline: Tuesday, October 4 by 5 p.m.

Bioengineering Research Grants (BRG) (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

This funding opportunity encourages collaborations between the life and physical sciences that: 1) apply a multidisciplinary bioengineering approach to the solution of a biomedical problem; and 2) integrate, optimize, validate, translate or otherwise accelerate the adoption of promising tools, methods, and techniques for a specific research or clinical problem in basic, translational, or clinical science and practice. An application may propose design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research and is appropriate for small teams applying an integrative approach to increase our understanding of and solve problems in biological, clinical, or translational science.

Next deadline: October 31, 2022

NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research: Computational Training in Neuroscience and Behavior (T90/R90 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

NIH seeks grant applications that will establish research training programs in computational neuroscience and behavior for undergraduate and predoctoral level students. The training program should expose undergraduate and graduate students to a wide range of neuroscience and behavioral questions, quantitative methods, and experimental systems to ensure a strong dual foundation in clinical and quantitative science. This foundation is expected to give trainees the ability to adopt new computational theory and methodology and apply these methods to relevant questions in health and disease.

Deadline: Tuesday, November 29, 2022

New Grant Awards

Congratulations to Tom Lane (NBB) and Kim Green (NBB) for receiving an NIH NINDS T32 award!

The award funds their training program in neuroimmunology, formally bringing together faculty members from across the neuroimmunology research spectrum to participate in mentorship and program-wide activities to share expertise and further develop the neuroimmunology field. Neuroimmunology is a rapidly growing field that touches a number of critical human diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, and viral encephalopathies. The award enables programming to enhance the quality of research and mentoring experiences of trainees and set them up for career success.

Please visit this webpage to learn more about this new training program.

Fund Fact

A recent study from Northwestern University shows that scientific research and public priorities for scientific research are well aligned. This finding may be surprising, given that there is a perception that most scientific research is too obscure for the public to appreciate its value and importance. This study shows that such a concern may be unfounded. You can read more here.
