Join the 2024 NIH Grants Policy Updates webinar

The NIH Office of Extramural Research will host the 2024 NIH Grants Policy Updates virtual event on January 31, 2024, 10:00–11:30 am PT. As an NIH investigator, you will learn about new policies and updates from NIH experts, including through a live Q&A session. Registration is free and currently open. Early career faculty are especially encouraged to attend.

How much money do U.S. institutions of higher education spend on research?

According to the NSF National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, in Fiscal Year 2022, U.S. colleges and universities spent $97.8 billion on research and development. Most of this money (55%) comes from the federal government, the largest sponsor of basic research. The institution that spends the most money on research is Johns Hopkins University ($3.4 billion). Out of 900 institutions, UC Irvine ranks at 57 with just under $535 million in FY 2022 research expenditures.
