Welcome to the first Research Bulletin issue of the academic year!
Research Bulletin is a product of BioSci’s Research Administration and Development (RAD) Unit. Every other Friday, we deliver to your inbox
-
policy updates and announcements from major sponsors,
-
upcoming events and seminars,
-
grant writing tips and resources to make your proposals stronger, and
-
funding opportunities relevant to researchers in all four of BioSci’s departments.
We hope that you find this hand-picked selection of research-related news, updates, and funding opportunities valuable to sustaining and increasing your research portfolio.
The RAD Unit supports BioSci’s research enterprise throughout the sponsored project lifecycle. Please reach out to the relevant RAD team for assistance.

- Note that starting October 23, every NSF applicant must use SciENcv to create their Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support document.
- Read about BioSci’s four Ultra Low Temperature freezers available for emergency use.
- Mark your calendars for upcoming ICTS and BioSci departmental seminars.
- Browse several funding opportunities from NSF and NIH.

Starting October 23, NSF applicants must use SciENcv.
For proposals due on or after October 23, NSF applicants will be required to use SciENcv to create their Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support form. The NSF fillable formats will no longer be accepted. To account for this transition, the RAD Unit recommends that you prepare these documents well in advance of your target submission. If you need assistance, consult the UCI Libraries’ SciENcv guide or contact Justin Sarkis (sarkisj@uci.edu) on BioSci’s Research Development Team.

The Research Development Team can help you manage a large proposal.
Are you working on a proposal involving many senior personnel, numerous letters of commitment, or a complicated solicitation, among other onerous tasks? If so, the Research Development Team will work with you to manage the proposal effort and help you develop a strong, compliant proposal. This support will allow you to focus less on administrative tasks and more on writing science. Please reach out to initiate the process or if you have any questions.

BioSci has acquired four Ultra Low Temperature freezers for emergency use.
Over the summer, BioSci acquired four Thermo Fisher Scientific Ultra Low Temperature (ULT) freezers for emergency-use. The ULT freezers, also known as "minus 80 freezers", are housed across Biological Sciences 3, McGaugh Hall, Natural Sciences I, and Steinhaus Hall. They are available for temporary use by all BioSci labs in the event of a freezer disruption or outage and complement the existing nine routinely used by labs within each department. For access to the emergency-use freezers, please contact BioSci Facilities.
A New York Times article from June 2023 describes a situation that can arise when emergency-use ULT freezers are not available.

NSF DEB Virtual Office Hours: “Welcome to DEB”
The Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) is hosting a series of virtual office hours to welcome new and prospective investigators to DEB. DEB supports research on evolutionary and ecological processes acting at the level of populations, species, communities, and ecosystems. The office hours will cover topics such as the merit review process, proposal preparation tips, funding opportunities, and more. The office hours will be held every second Monday of every month from 10am to 11am PT, starting on October 16, 2023.
