Faculty, Research, Travel and Computing (FRTC)

What is the FRTC Competition?

FRTC is a small, internal competition for funds that support Dunlop School faculty members’ research, travel, and computing needs. The funds come from the UC Irvine Academic Senate Council on Research, Computing and Libraries (CORCL), which receives an annual appropriation from the campus Instruction and Research budget. CORCL re-allocates its funds to the academic units’ School Research Committees, and the academic units must then run internal competitions to award the grants. In the Dunlop School, the Research Development Team administers the competition.

FAQs

What is the competition timeline?

The Research Development Team typically releases an annual call for proposals in early December, with an early January deadline. The FRTC Committee then reviews the proposals and awards the funds by February. Announcements are emailed to the faculty from the Associate Dean of Research and Innovation, and reminders are also included in the Research Bulletin newsletter.

What does the FRTC competition fund?

The competition funds small research projects to generate data for extramural proposals, travel to collaborate with other researchers, travel to conferences, and computer hardware or software. For more information, consult CORCL’s webpage here.
