Centers and Institutes

Faculty and researchers with the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences work across disciplines through various centers and institutes. Some centers are managed by the Biological Sciences School, while others are partnerships involving many campus units as well as entities off campus. The following school and affiliated centers and institutes have significant participation from Bio Sci faculty.

Beckman Laser Institute

An interdisciplinary center for research and education in biomedical optics that also provides patients with access to advanced therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Campus Center for Neuroimaging

The center offers imaging resources to UCI’s research community and provides a means for the development and integration of neuroimaging across campus.

Cancer Research Institute

The Cancer Research Institute supports faculty research, organizes cancer-related training, and functions as the basic sciences arm of the UC Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Engineering

The Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Engineering fosters multidisciplinary research aimed at understanding the relation between cognitive abilities and neural systems.

Center for Complex Biological Systems

The Center integrates expertise and perspectives from diverse scientific fields to develop a deeper understanding of biological processes.

Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism

A physical, intellectual and organizational environment for the study of epigenetics and its relationship with cellular metabolism.

Center for Environmental Biology

Research, education, and outreach in biological science to help develop new solutions to environmental problems.

Center for Evolutionary Genetics

The Center fosters research that applies of molecular and genetic tools to answer fundamental questions in evolutionary biology.

Center for Hearing Research

The Center for Hearing Research seeks to promote an understanding of hearing across all levels of biological organization.

Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory

The goal for the Center for Neurobiology of Learning & Memory aims to discover the fundamental brain mechanisms of learning and memory and promotes research with the potential to transform education, technology and brain health.

Center for Statistical Consulting

IMRI Operates open-access user facilities for the characterization of inorganic, organic, and biological materials and devices ranging from sub-atomic to macroscopic length scales.

Aims to foster scholarship, training, and collaborative multidisciplinary research based on studies founded in molecular virology.

Institute for Clinical and Translational Science

Advances scientific discovery and medical breakthroughs by translating discoveries in the lab into life-altering medical care in the clinic.

Developmental Biology Center

Fosters collaborations and supports campus-wide activities that benefit UCI’s developmental biology community.

Conte Center on Brain Programming in Adolescent Vulnerabilities

Addresses the complex developmental mechanisms contributing to adolescent resilience or vulnerabilities to mental illnesses.

Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics

Fosters interdisciplinary research at the intersection of the life and computational sciences.

Irvine Center for Addiction and Neuroscience

Provides a vehicle for conducting addiction neuroscience research and cultivating collaborations spanning from basic research to clinical applications.

Institute for Memory Impairment and Neurological Disorders

Reeve-Irvine Research Center

Strives to find treatments for spinal cord injury and supports the research and educational efforts locally and globally.

Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center

Supports stem cell research and clinical trials and also promotes public awareness and education about stem cell research and therapies.

Functions as a single umbrella structure for the management and operations of the University’s natural areas and field-based assets that support research, education and public engagement.

University of California Drug Discovery Consortium

Aims to build a drug discovery community for the UC system.

Water-Energy Nexus Center

Promotes comprehensive and trans-disciplinary approaches to water and energy efficiency and to greenhouse gas reduction in the water sector of urban environments with rapidly growing populations.
