Pre-Peer Review Program
Pre-peer review, in the context of sponsored projects, is the assessment of a proposal before it is submitted to the sponsor. While the Research Development Team can provide Dunlop School researchers with feedback to strengthen any proposal, some faculty members may also want feedback from an expert in their field on the scientific merit of their project.
The Research Development Team will arrange a pre-peer review of a Dunlop School faculty member’s proposal. Please complete this form to start the process. Please be aware that onboarding a reviewer as a UC Irvine contractor can take up to two months. Therefore, we recommend that you start this process at least four months before your sponsor’s deadline.
NOTE: UC faculty members and staff cannot be paid for pre-peer review. Therefore, we recommend selecting an expert outside of the UC system.

Faculty Research, Travel, and Computing (FRTC) Program
What is the FRTC Competition?
FRTC is a small, internal competition for funds that support Dunlop School faculty members’ research, travel, and computing needs. The funds come from the UC Irvine Academic Senate Council on Research, Computing and Libraries (CORCL), which receives an annual appropriation from the campus Instruction and Research budget. CORCL re-allocates its funds to the academic units’ School Research Committees, and the academic units must then run internal competitions to award the grants. In the Dunlop School, the Research Development Team administers the competition.

FAQs
The Research Development Team typically releases an annual call for proposals in early December, with an early January deadline. The FRTC Committee then reviews the proposals and awards the funds by February. Announcements are emailed to the faculty from the Associate Dean of Research and Innovation, and reminders are also included in the Research Bulletin newsletter.
The competition funds small research projects to generate data for extramural proposals, travel to collaborate with other researchers, travel to conferences, and computer hardware or software. For more information, consult CORCL’s webpage here.

SOM-Dunlop School Incentive Program
The deans’ offices of the School of Medicine and the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences are eager to support joint grant applications. They encourage Multiple Principal Investigator (MPI) research grants, involving at least one PI from the School of Medicine and at least one from the Dunlop School, at the NIH R01 level or equivalent (e.g., not an R03 or R21).
To be eligible for these funds, one PI should fill out the SOM-BIO Incentive Program form prior to submission.
For each proposal, the Dunlop School PI is eligible for a $2,500 incentive upon submission and another $2,500 upon award. If there are multiple Dunlop School PIs as part of a single submission, the incentive will be divided equally.
Training Grant Incentive Program
In appreciation of the efforts of training grant directors, the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences Dean’s Office has established an incentive program specifically designed for the first-time submission of new or competing renewal applications.
Please complete the Training Grant Incentive Program form prior to submission to be eligible for this incentive. Upon award, please return to the form and attach your Notice of Award by editing your initial response.
The Dean’s Office will provide $5,000 to Dunlop School PIs whose applications are submitted through the Dunlop School, an ORU, or another school. PIs who have a joint appointment in Dunlop School may be eligible if they submit their proposal through the Dunlop School. Upon award, the Dean’s Office and the PI’s home department will each provide an additional $5,000. If there are multiple Dunlop School PIs, the money will be divided equally.
Note: Non-Dunlop School faculty members are not eligible for these incentive funds.
